Description
An assortment of antique black glass buttons dating from the Victorian and Edwardian eras, organized on a display card titled BLACK GLASS BIRDS. These items are buttons featuring a wide array of avian-themed designs, including specific species such as peacocks, owls, swans, herons, and doves, as well as narrative scenes like birds in nests and hatching chicks. The collection showcases various 19th-century manufacturing techniques, including acid-etching, hand-painting, and the application of metallic luster finishes in gold, silver, copper, and gunmetal. Notable technical features include specimens with paste-set eyes, fired-on paint, and various shapes ranging from standard rounds to hexagonal and contoured forms. One button is documented on the card as having a backmark dated December 28, 1880.
