Description
This Japanese Satsuma ware earthenware vase dates from the Meiji period (1868–1912). The vessel features a globular body with a short, flared neck, crafted from cream-colored earthenware finished with a fine, all-over crackle glaze. The exterior is decorated with polychrome enamels and extensive gilding, including moriage (raised enamel) techniques. The primary decorative scene depicts a duck and a drake swimming among reeds in a stream, positioned beneath overhanging branches of flowering blossoms. The scene is rendered with intricate detail in the feather textures and includes a stippled gold background. The shoulder and neck are ornamented with dense borders of traditional brocade patterns, including diaper motifs and floral medallions. The center of the unglazed base contains faint markings in a dark pigment, though these characters are not clearly legible. The interior of the vase shows visible throwing rings and surface residue.

Condition report:
The vase displays an overall fine craquelure characteristic of Satsuma earthenware. There is a horizontal hairline crack visible on one side of the body and another hairline crack extending from the foot rim into the lower portion of the vase. The gilded highlights show minor wear consistent with age. There is surface soiling on the interior and staining on the unglazed base.
