Description
A 19th-century watercolor on paper landscape depicting Kirklees, near Huddersfield, England. The composition features a calm river in the foreground reflecting golden autumnal trees and a cluster of stone dwellings, set against a backdrop of wooded hills. The work is signed P. Sykes in the lower right corner and underlined. Two labels are affixed to the verso of the backing paper. One typed label identifies the title as Kirklees, the artist as Peace Sykes, the date as circa 1873, and notes a connection to S. Stansfield Priestley. A second commercial label is for the Purnell Art Company, Baltimore, Maryland. The painting is housed in a wide, gold-painted textured mat and a gilt-wood frame with a beaded inner edge.
Frame: 24.5 x 19.5 inches. Pickup is Friday, July 31, from Noon to 7 pm at our facility in Lancaster, OH. Alternate pickup day is available by appointment for a $5 fee per lot or we will provide in-house shipping for this item. Condition report:
The watercolor exhibits overall toning and minor mat burn along the sight edges. The gold-painted mat shows visible scuffs and areas of paint loss, most notably on the left and top edges. The gilt-wood frame has minor surface wear and small losses to the gilding consistent with age.
