Description
A 20th-century Chinese-style vanity or jewelry chest featuring a black lacquered finish with gold-toned Chinoiserie decoration. The case is constructed with a stepped profile. The hinged lid opens to reveal an adjustable easel-back mirror. The chest is fitted with two small upper drawers over one full-width lower drawer. The exterior surface is decorated with gold-toned motifs, including a dragon and phoenix on the lid, floral sprays on the sides and drawer fronts, and scrolling borders. The interior is lined with paper printed with traditional Chinese calligraphy and figurative scenes in black ink on a yellowed background. Visible characters include 嚴 (strict), 辭 (diction), 外 (outside), 算 (calculate), 乖 (clever), 吉 (auspicious), 見 (see), and 誠 (sincerity). The chest is outfitted with ornate brass-toned metal hardware, including side carrying handles, corner protectors, and decorative drawer pulls. The chest currently contains an assortment of multi-colored incense cones.

Condition report:
The chest shows significant signs of age and wear. There is heavy chipping and loss to the lacquer finish, particularly along the edges and corners, revealing the light-colored wooden substrate beneath. The gold-toned decorations show rubbing and fading. The metal hardware exhibits oxidation and tarnish. The interior paper lining shows age-related yellowing. The mirror glass is in good condition.
