Description
This pair of mid-19th century hand-colored lithographs depicts two iconic landmarks of Imperial St. Petersburg, Russia. The first print illustrates the Winter Palace (Palais d’Hiver), shown from a perspective across Palace Square with numerous figures in period costume, horsemen, and carriages. The second print depicts the Grand Church of the Winter Palace (L’Eglise du Grand Palais). Both compositions are characteristic of the Russian vedute tradition popularized by artists such as Ferdinand Victor Perrot and Vasilii Sadovnikov in the 1830s and 1840s. The reverse of each frame features a typed label providing the French title and phonetic transliterations of the Russian names: Nurhin Abopenb (representing Zimniy Dvorets) and Clipnobopliar Nepkobb (representing Pridvornaya Tserkov). Secondary labels for the Purnell Art Company of Baltimore, Maryland, are also present on the back. The prints are housed in silver-toned wooden frames with cream-colored mats.

Alternate pickup day is available by appointment for a $5 fee per lot or we will provide in-house shipping for this item. Condition report:
Both lithographs show significant signs of age and environmental damage. Extensive foxing and brown spotting are visible across the sky portions and paper margins of both prints. There is overall paper toning and evidence of acid burn from contact with non-archival mounting materials. The frames exhibit light surface wear and minor scuffing to the silver finish.
