Description
This decorative circular charger is crafted using the cloisonne technique, featuring fine brass wires that form intricate cells filled with polychrome vitreous enamels. The central motif depicts a red-crowned crane (Grus japonensis) in a dynamic downward flight pose, rendered in white, black, and red enamels. The bird is set against a vibrant turquoise-blue ground. A formal border composed of stylized floral florets in yellow, orange, and red within scrolling wirework encircles the rim. The reverse of the charger is finished in a similar blue enamel and decorated with a dense, all-over pattern of scrolling wirework, a characteristic feature of Japanese cloisonne from the Meiji period. A metal hanging loop is attached to the upper rim. No maker marks, stamps, or signatures are visible on the piece.
Diameter: 12 inches. Pickup is Friday, July 31, from Noon to 7 pm at our facility in Lancaster, OH. Alternate pickup day is available by appointment for a $5 fee per lot or we will provide in-house shipping for this item. Condition report:
The enamel field shows a network of fine hairline crazing and several visible cracks, particularly in the lower section of the turquoise ground. Minor surface pitting and shallow scratches are present, consistent with age and handling. The exposed metal rim and cloison wires exhibit a darkened patina with localized areas of oxidation and tarnish. The included carved wooden display stand shows light surface wear and minor scuffing.
