Description

This is a miniature beaded textile accessory, identified through visual consensus as a Native American Iroquois tourist trade item, commonly referred to as a whimsy, dating to the early 20th century. The item is constructed from a reddish-orange ribbed silk or rayon fabric. One side of the fold-over bag features a prominent raised six-petaled flower motif made of clear glass seed beads with a green beaded center, built upon a stiffened paper or cardstock backing. The reverse side displays smaller beaded clusters and linear clear bead accents. The edges of the flap and the body are finished with multiple rows of clear glass seed beads. It includes a single looped handle composed of larger, faceted translucent greyish-brown glass beads. The interior is lined with matching red fabric. No maker marks, labels, or hardware closures are present.

Condition report:

Poor to fair condition. The silk fabric shows significant wear, heavy fraying, and material loss, particularly along the edges and where the paper backing of the decorative motifs is exposed. The beadwork is largely intact, though some threads are loose due to the deterioration of the underlying textile. There is light surface soiling and interior debris.
