Description
This lot features two vintage pinback buttons from the late 20th-century LGBTQ+ rights movement. The first item is a circular metal button with a white field and black serif lettering reading I [red heart symbol] BEING GAY. The second item is a triangular metal button produced by Donnelly/Colt, a known manufacturer of social justice ephemera. This button features a neon pink to dark purple gradient background with the text SOMEONE YOU CARE ABOUT IS LESBIAN OR GAY in black bold sans-serif lettering. A small pink triangle, a historical symbol reclaimed by activist groups, is featured at the bottom point. Maker’s information is printed along the edges, identifying the producer as Donnelly/Colt based in Hampton, Connecticut, with the address Box 188 and telephone number 203 455-9602.
Circular button: Approximately 1.5 inches in diameter
Triangular button: Approximately 2 inches in width at top edge. Pickup is Friday, July 31, from Noon to 7 pm at our facility in Lancaster, OH. Alternate pickup day is available by appointment for a $5 fee per lot or we will provide in-house shipping for this item. Condition report:
The circular button shows age-related yellowing and surface wear to the front face; the reverse is heavily oxidized with significant surface rust across the entire metal backing. The triangular button exhibits several small reddish-brown stains on the front face, primarily above the words SOMEONE and YOU. The reverse of the triangular button is in good condition with bright metal and only minor pinpoint oxidation. Both pins are functional.
