Description
This lot features a diverse collection of World War II-era souvenir currency and United States Silver Certificates. The primary highlight is a short snorter chain composed of approximately twelve international banknotes stapled together, extensively hand-signed by service members. The chain includes a United Kingdom 1 Pound note (Serial B78H 829422) and 10 Shillings note (Serial 68W 941726), both signed by N.R. Dodd; France Banque de France notes in denominations of 5, 10, and 20 Francs; a France Allied Military Currency 10 Francs note (Series 1944); a Belgium Banque Nationale de Belgique 10 Francs note (Serial J2 497009); a Luxembourg Grand-Duche de Luxembourg 10 Francs note (Serial A319650); and a United States $1 Silver Certificate (Serial D66798360C). Legible inscriptions on the chain include Souvenir de Cecilia Longuebray (Blondie), Milton A. Fulfaro, and Joe Brandon, with home locations such as South Bend, Ind and Brooklyn N.Y. Loose currency includes a large-size United States $1 Silver Certificate, Series of 1923 (Serial R24071345B), with blue seals and printed signatures of H. Speelman and Frank White. Also present is a small-size $5 Silver Certificate, Series of 1934 A (Serial H22322534A), featuring blue serial numbers and signatures of W.A. Julian and Henry Morgenthau Jr. The collection is rounded out by four small-size US $1 Silver Certificates: Series 1935 B (H80975112B), Series 1935 D (T41243371F), Series 1935 E (Y57909989G), and Series 1957 B (W99002202A), and a single German 5 Reichsmark note. Pickup is Friday, July 31, from Noon to 7 pm at our facility in Lancaster, OH. Condition report:
The collection shows overall heavy circulation wear consistent with wartime handling. The large-size 1923 $1 Silver Certificate is in poor condition with heavy crackle creasing, surface staining, and rounded corners; it is currently housed in a clear protective sleeve. The 1934 A $5 Silver Certificate exhibits a prominent vertical tape repair through the center portrait and general soiling. The short snorter chain is heavily worn with multiple folds, staining, pinholes from staples, and extensive ink markings. The small-size $1 Silver Certificates range from Very Good to crisp Uncirculated condition, with the 1935 E and 1957 B examples being the most well-preserved.
