Description
A late 19th-century American five-drawer chest of drawers representative of utilitarian country furniture. The piece is constructed from pine with a reddish-brown stained finish. It features five drawers in a vertical arrangement, each fitted with two turned wooden knobs. The base is decorated with a scalloped apron. A significant feature of this chest is the use of Knapp joints, also known as pin-and-scallop or half-moon joinery, for the drawer construction. This machine-made joinery was unique to American furniture production from approximately 1867 to 1900. The secondary woods utilized for the drawer interiors are a lighter species, likely poplar or pine. No maker labels or marks are present.

Condition report:
The chest is in fair to good condition with visible signs of age and use. The top surface shows notable wear, including scratches and areas of finish loss. The drawer fronts and turned knobs exhibit general wear and abrasions. There is minor chipping to the wood at the edges of the drawer joints.
