Description

American flat-top steamer trunk dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The body is constructed of wood panels, likely pine, with three horizontal hardwood slats across the front and four across the lid. The exterior features red painted panels reinforced with black-painted metal straps, vertical bands, and corner guards secured with decorative studs. Hardware includes two substantial cast metal drawbolt latches on the front and three metal hinges on the rear. The back panel is pierced with two rows of small, drilled ventilation holes. The sides are fitted with heavy canvas strap handles secured by metal brackets. The interior has been repainted in a cream color over the original wooden boards and contains two metal lid supports. No maker marks, labels, or patent dates are visible.

Condition report:

Fair antique condition. The exterior shows widespread paint loss, scuffs, and abrasions to the red panels and black metalwork. Surface oxidation and light rust are present on the metal components. Wood slats exhibit typical nicks and scratches consistent with age and travel use. The interior paint is peeling and stained. One canvas handle is heavily worn and frayed. Drawbolts and hinges remain functional.
