July Military Auction
Lot 25105:
Description
This decoration is a Belgian Croix de Guerre (Cross of War), an award instituted in 1915 to recognize acts of bravery on the battlefield. The medal is struck in bronze and features a Maltese cross with ball-tipped points and crossed swords positioned between the arms. The cross is suspended from a detailed representation of the Belgian royal crown. The obverse central medallion features a lion rampant, which is the heraldic symbol of Belgium. The reverse central medallion contains a calligraphic stylized letter A surmounted by a royal crown, which is the royal monogram of King Albert I (reigned 1909 to 1934). The medal is suspended from a red silk moire ribbon featuring three vertical green stripes. Two bronze palm branches are attached to the ribbon, each featuring a small stylized letter A centered among the leaves. In the Belgian honors system, these palms indicate the recipient was mentioned in dispatches at the army level.
