Description
Jacob Stewart rope-tension snare drum produced in the early American Civil War era. The interior shell bears a printed paper label that reads JACOB STEWART, MANUFACTURER OF Military and Toy Drums, BANJOS, TAMBORINES, &c. Water Street, Pittsfield, Mass. The year 1861 is handwritten in dark ink at the bottom of the label. The drum is constructed with a dark-stained bentwood shell featuring a visible tacked seam and matching bentwood hoops. It utilizes a natural fiber rope tensioning system with thick leather slider tabs used for adjustment. The instrument is fitted with natural skin batter and snare heads. Four gut snare strands are stretched across the bottom head and secured with a metal J-hook strainer mechanism. A thick braided rope carrying loop is attached to the upper hoop.
