Description
A collection of buttons featuring various religious motifs and iconography mounted on two display boards. The assortment includes two large oval porcelain buttons with hand-painted portraits of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, a circular carved mother-of-pearl button depicting an angel, and a rectangular blue and white jasperware-style cameo button of Christ with a crown of thorns. The group further contains a large carved black and gold cross-motif button, a purple glass cross-shaped button, and a carved bone or composition religious figure. Metal buttons include depictions of St. Hubert with a stag and St. George and the Dragon, the latter featuring the inscription S. GEORGIUS EQUITUM PATRONUS. One button features a depiction of a saint with the inscription ISLE LA MOTTE, VT. Several buttons are accompanied by handwritten notes on the mounting boards, including a reference to a central motif of a shepherd driving his flock and a citation for BBB, pl. 247, 22.
