Description
This collection of various vintage and antique buttons and related small collectibles is organized around a transportation theme. These are buttons depicting a wide array of vehicles including early automobiles, locomotives, bicycles, airplanes, hot air balloons, and horse-drawn carriages. The lot features a large brass trolley-motif button and a watch crystal piece with a scenic inset. Construction materials include stamped and cast metals with various finishes, enamel work, and carved bone or synthetic materials. Several items include handwritten annotations on the mounting board such as Ship of Devilment, Fantasy Trains (Riding Lions), and Jaunting Carriage. Specific pieces are attributed to Susan Houghton, and a square plaque featuring hot air balloons is signed Layden. The group encompasses styles ranging from Victorian picture buttons to mid-century novelty shapes.
