Description

Cabinet Card featuring relics taken from soldiers’ pockets at the Battle of Shiloh when they were interred in the National Cemetery. This image shows a large frame with cubbyholes, each numbered and corresponding to a grave number in the National Cemetery at the Shiloh Battlefield. The back of the card gives a listing of the items from each grave. In three cases, soldiers of the 13th Missouri are actually identified. The front of the image bears the photographer’s imprint, “Head, Mexico, MO.” (Missouri). A search indicates that the photography studio of Head & Howe operated in Mexico, Missouri during the 1890s.  NOTE: This photograph was found with a group of 17 Shiloh Battlefield – Reunion related photographs. The other images are listed in lots . While this bears the “Head Mexico Mo.” photographers imprint found on many of the others, it is not dated and it does not specifically list the location.Nevertheless, it is possible that the photographer took this image when he was at the battlefield for the1895 Shiloh reunion.
