Lot 129:
Description
Civil War 1862 pamphlet titled “Letter of the Hon. Thomas Ewing to His Excellency Benj. Stanton, Lieut. Governor of Ohio, in Answer to his Charges Against our Generals who fought the Battle of Shiloh on the 6th of April, 1862.” Published in 1862 at Columbus, Richard Nevins, Printer. Ewing was a lawyer in Lancaster, Ohio who later became a U.S. Senator and later Secretary of the Treasury, then Secretary of the Interior. He was the father-in-law of William T. Sherman, whose actions at Shiloh he defends in this letter. Stanton served as lieutenant governor of Ohio in 1862. After the battle at Shiloh he visited the troops and published a strong criticism of the actions there, especially critical of Grant and Sherman. This letter of rebuttal to Stanton by Ewing provides insights into the political and historical controversies that still surround Shiloh. The letter is paperbound with sewn construction, has some light foxing, with light pencil marking and creases. 24 pages. 5 3⁄4 x 9 inches.
