Description
“Brief History of the 46th Ohio Volunteers, by Col. T. Worthington in his 74th Year”(Published 1881). Title cover has engraving of Worthington on horseback, entitled “First Fire at Shiloh at Noon.” And captioned “Horse Rears at a Shot Through the Withers. Col.Tom Worthington receiving the first fire at Shiloh, at Noon.” Back cover is an engraving of Worthington seated and holding a crutch, age 74.The first 21 pages is a history of the 46th Ohio, focusing on Shiloh, then the march to Corinth. The Appendix lists all officers and men who were present at Shiloh, followed by a list of the killed, wounded and missing at the battle, with some men listed who are not listed as casualties in the Ohio roster. This is followed by a short biography of Worthington’s Civil War career and some poems including “A Ballad of Shiloh” written by a member of the 46th for a reunion at Van Wert, Ohio in 1879. The final pages are excerpts from “Grant around the World with Young” and “Grant’s Falsehoods as to Shiloh” that make claims against the truth of Grant’s reports on Shiloh as well as disparagements of William T. Sherman. This is followed by a report “Falsehood of Grant as to General Johnson’s Fall” and finally “Facts Developed as to the Battle of Shiloh by Col. Worthington’s Court Martial August 1862”. All these last reports are strong criticisms made against Grant and Sherman by Worthington and his attempts to defend and promote his reputation as regards his actions at Shiloh. The front cover is separated and edges are worn; back cover is intact and attached but with worn edges. Some inside pages are loose.
