Rare paper presented to the Ohio Commandery of the Loyal Legion December 4, 1907 by Civil War Veteran Charles Gentsch M.D., a Civil War veteran of the 51st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, OVI. Titled “INSTANTANEOUS RIGOR-MORTIS Occasionally Occurring and Observed Upon The Battlefield”, this document is an historical account of a rare phenomenon, the immediate stiffening of muscles in the moment of death, as observed during the Civil War. Printed ion booklet form and perhaps distributed at the presentation to the Ohio Commandery. We can find no other examples of this 16 page paper – booklet on the internet. There are numerous examples herein of soldiers who were founds frozen into the position they held at the moment of their death. Examples sited in detail include accounts from Williamsburg, Belmont, Antietam, Stones River, Goldsboro, North Carolina and even the charge of the Light Brigade in the Crimean War.
