Description
Large and rare archive belonging to Lt. Col. (and later general) William Burnham Woods of the 76th Ohio. Special Order Number 882 of October 1861 authorized Col. Charles R. Woods to organize a regiment of infantry at Camp Sherman, near Newark, Ohio. Recruitment had begun for a Licking County regiment as early as September 1861. Enrollment was for three years’ duty. Since the majority of the troops were from Licking County, the regiment had the field nickname of "The Licking Volunteers." The regiment held 962 officers and men when it was mustered in on February 9, 1862. This archive includes: a handwritten letter from General Sherman to Woods discussing the "Lancaster Boys, " an extremely long (12 full front pages, with several partial backs of pages) describing the Battle of Resaca (Georgia) in extreme detail; 3 other lengthy Woods orders related to the 76th; Confederate currency; 1933 Reunion booklet; family album containing cabinet cards, tintypes etc; Newark, Ohio yearbooks from the 1920s; Civil War covers, 1929-30 Newark, Ohio city directory, legal book from Woods’ law career; 2 modern books on the 76th, Woods’ gavel; Roser of Ohio Soldiers 1861-66 book; Rare CDV of the battle flag of the 76th taken in the Newark studio it mostly came back to; Woods’ sash, purported to the the sash in the CDV – it does look identical; Veterans event ribbons and medals; Woods’ epaulettes as Lt. Colonel; old typed descriptions on cardboard, likely from some kind of old display; Woods’ buckskin gloves, daguerreotype of Woods’ wife, daguerreotype of a child, Ambrotype of a man who appears to be Woods as a young man; Wooden box with star and arrows (includes key); fired and dropped minie balls and musket balls; a lengthy early 20th century typed history of the 76th (unpublished) and written by Woods; large field trunk that belonged to W.B. Woods during the Civil War – it has "W.B. Woods/76 OVI" stencilled on the front and measures 36" x 19" high x 18" wide; a CDV of Charles Woods and CDVs of women in the family, a small field desk and telescope; a light camp blanket and a framed portrait of WB Woods.
