Unusual and interesting barnstormer items from 1914. The letter dated 1950 from Frederick Carlisle Snodgrass (October 19, 1887-April 5, 1974) to a "Mickey" (Mantle?) detailing that this group of National and American League players barnstormed in 1914, with each receiving $13. The accompanying photo is of the barnstorming group, and the pay document states each player’s name, pay of $13 and includes the name and signature of each player (with two lacking signatures ("Seattle" Bill James and J. Miller) . Snodgrass was an American center fielder in Major League Baseball from 1908 to 1916. He is best known for dropping a key fly ball in the 1912 World Series. He is in the photo, signed the pay document and penned the note. Other players in the photo and that signed this pay document include: Maximillian George Carnarius (January 11, 1890 – May 30, 1976), known as Max George Carey (in the photo it is written "Carry, " while the signature is M.G. Carey). Carey was an American professional baseball center fielder and manager. Carey played in Major League Baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1910 through 1926 and for the Brooklyn Robins from 1926 through 1929. He managed the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1932 and 1933. Carey starred for the Pirates, helping them win the 1925 World Series; James Leslie "Hippo" Vaughn (April 9, 1888 – May 29, 1966); Charles Monroe "Jeff" Tesreau (March 5, 1888 – September 24, 1946); William Lawrence "Seattle Bill" James (March 12, 1892 – March 10, 1971) DID NOT SIGN; a J. Miller (signed for by Byrn); Arthur Fletcher (January 5, 1885 – February 6, 1950) an American shortstop, manager and coach in Major League Baseball; third baseman Robert Matthew "Bobby" Byrne (December 31, 1884 – December 31, 1964); George Henry Burns (January 31, 1893 – January 7, 1978), nicknamed "Tioga George", an American first baseman in Major League Baseball (MLB) who played for five American League (AL) teams from 1914 to 1929; Albert J. "Cozy" Dolan (born James Alberts, December 23, 1882[1] – December 10, 1958); a Thomas Clark; William Lavier Killefer (October 10, 1887 – July 3, 1960), nicknamed "Reindeer Bill, " an American professional baseball player, coach and manager and finally Francis Carter Bancroft (May 9, 1846 – March 30, 1921) an American manager in Major League Baseball for the Worcester Ruby Legs, Detroit Wolverines, Cleveland Blues, Providence Grays, Indianapolis Hoosiers, and Cincinnati Reds of the National League, as well as the Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association. His greatest success came with the Grays, when he won the 1884 World Series with a record of 84-28. What a treasure. In-house shipping available.
