Charles King was the son of noted Civil War General and Iron Brigade commander Rufus King. He graduated from West Point in 1866 and was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the Artillery. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of the 1st U.S. Artillery in 1870 and transferred to the 5th Cavalry, commanded by General George Crook, in 1871. The photograph of him included in this lot was taken during that short time 1870-71 that he was still a 1st Lt. in the 1st Artillery. He participated with the 5th Cavalry in several Indian campaigns, including those against the Apaches (1874), the Sioux and Cheyenne (1876), and the Nez Perce (1877). While fighting against the Apache, he was wounded in action at Sunset Pass, Ariz. In 1879 he was promoted to captain, and retired the same year because of disability from his wounds. While a member of the 5th Cavalry, King befriended the regiment’s scout William "Buffalo Bill" Cody. They remained friends throughout life. The newspaper clipping included in this lot refers to General King going to Washington D.C. to meet with the Society of Indian Wars Veterans in order to defend Buffalo Bill Cody’s Army service record. At the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, King was called from retirement, and served in the Philippines as brigadier general, U.S. Volunteers (1898-1899). He then taught military science and tactics at St. John’s Military Academy in Delafield, and was on duty with the Wisconsin National Guard from 1904 until his retirement in 1931. Upon his first retirement in 1879, King began to write about his experiences as a soldier. Throughout the course of his literary career, wrote over 60 books and hundreds of short stories and articles. The two Charles King books in this lot include Comrades in Arms, 1904 and Warrior Gap, A story of the Sioux Outbreak of ’68, 1898. Please see lot 1242 for a selection of 12 Charles King Books.
