Description
This US Army enlisted men’s M1939 four-pocket wool service coat is identified as belonging to a staff sergeant within the First Special Service Force (FSSF), the elite joint American-Canadian commando unit known as the Devil’s Brigade. The olive drab wool jacket includes a khaki service shirt and a tan necktie. The left shoulder is adorned with the distinctive red arrowhead patch featuring white USA and CANADA text. The right lapel bears the brass crossed arrows branch insignia. The left chest display features a Combat Infantryman Badge, a ribbon bar for the Purple Heart and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two bronze service stars and a bronze arrowhead device, a silver-tone marksmanship badge with machine gun and rifle bars, and parachutist wings mounted on a red, white, and blue cloth oval. The right chest displays a Presidential Unit Citation and a gold-tone honorable discharge emblem, or ruptured duck, patch. The left sleeve features three chevrons and one arc for the rank of staff sergeant, four gold overseas service bars representing two years of foreign service, and one service stripe indicating three years of honorable service. A braided red, white, and blue shoulder cord is present on the left side. The interior collar lining displays a black ink laundry mark reading H0469.
