Description
This French military decoration is a Médaille Militaire (Military Medal), specifically the Third Republic variant established in 1870. The award features a silvered metal laurel wreath surrounding a circular gilt metal medallion. The obverse center displays a profile head of the Republic, encircled by a blue enameled ring inscribed REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE 1870. The reverse center is inscribed VALEUR ET DISCIPLINE within a matching blue enameled ring. The medal is suspended from a gilt metal trophy of arms that includes a breastplate, cannons, axes, and an anchor. It remains attached to its original yellow silk ribbon with green borders. The reverse of the ribbon contains a two-pronged metal mounting pin.
