Description
A collection of United States Army garrison caps, commonly referred to as overseas or side caps, spanning the early World War II period through the Vietnam era. The lot includes a variety of styles in wool (Olive Drab and chocolate brown) and cotton twill (khaki and tan). The collection features various branch-of-service piping, including light blue for Infantry, maroon and white intertwined for Medical Corps, orange and white intertwined for Signal Corps, and gold and black intertwined for Commissioned Officers. Several enlisted examples are plain without piping. The collection includes one circular khaki cotton removable cover for a rigid-frame service cap.
Legible manufacturer labels and contract information identify several pieces, including the Correct Cap Company (dated October 15, 1941, and March 18, 1944), Society Brand Hat Co. (dated March 13, 1941), Sacks Meyerowitz and Greenstein with a Depot label (Contract 7289 N), Funk Bros. Hat and Cap Co., and a Vietnam-era M and B Headwear Co. example dated 1968 (Contract DSA100-68-C-1003). One example retains a retail stamp on the leather sweatband for Lloyd Marshall, Adams Square, Boston.
Provenance is provided by various period soldier identifications found in the linings, including caps named to J.O. Hickman (H-1076) and Vese (V-9433). Other examples feature internal stamps for service numbers B-9717 and L-1416. One wool garrison cap is presented in its original plastic distribution bag. We do our best to describe all items in the sale, and we definitely take a ton of photos. But, we are not able to guarantee authenticity or era of items in the sale. Please carefully look at all photos (up to 100 in some cases on our in-house platform) to judge for yourself what you are buying. All sales are final. Our in-house shipping is available. Alternate pickup day is available by appointment for a $5 fee per lot or we will provide in-house shipping for this item.
