Description

A Shepard Hardware Company Punch and Judy cast iron mechanical bank, manufactured in Buffalo, New York, circa 1884. The bank is constructed of cast iron with a polychrome painted finish and is designed as a miniature puppet theater. The stage features two articulated figures: Punch, depicted with a hooked nose and pointed hat holding a club, and Judy, wearing a bonnet and holding a pan. The front pediment is embossed with the text PUNCH AND JUDY BANK. The side and rear panels feature decorative lattice-work, and the stage backdrop is painted with a curtain and tassel motif. A lever mounted on the right side operates the mechanical figures to deposit coins into a slot on the stage floor. The underside is embossed with several markings including BUFFALO, N.Y. – U.S.A., PATD. U.S. JULY 15, 84 AND JULY 22, 84, and British registration numbers No. 10423 and No. 10185.
