Civil War inscribed CDV of Colonel William S Tilton. Image is signed on the front, “Wm S Tilton Col 22d Mass Vols”. The image is backmarked J.E. Tilton Manufacturers & Importers of Photograph Albums & Cartes De Visite 161 Wash’n St. Boston. Photographed by Black. The image measures 4.1875″ x 2.5″ and is in excellent condition. William Tilton enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant on 9/12/1861. Promoted to Major on 10/4/1861, he was wounded and captured at the Battle of Gaines Mills where the 22nd Massachusetts Infantry suffered losses of 71 killed, 86 wounded and 177 captured. The regiment spent most of its service in the 1st Division of the 5th Army Corps. The 22nd Massachusetts was present for virtually all of the major battles in which the Army of the Potomac fought, including the Second Battle of Bull Run, The Battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the 1864 Overland Campaign.  At Gettysburg,Tilton commanded the Brigade which included the 22nd Massachusetts Vols. Tilton was promoted to Brigadier General by Brevet on 9/9/1864. He was mustered out on 10/17/1864 at Boston, Masschusetts.
