Description
Civil War Veteran’s memorial that bears the handwritten history of William H. Barhite of Ellington, New York who served in Co. B of the 112th New York Volunteer Infantry. The memorial was “Published expressly for the Army and Navy Record Co.” by the Pettibone Brothers Co. in 1883. Barhite’s service history is presented in detail on this memorial. The memorial measures 20″ x 26″ and is housed in the original frame that measures 21.5″ x 27.5″.He enlisted August 4, 1862 and was mustered in at Jamestown, New York. The list of campaigns and battles in which he participated is listed and included; in Virginia – Duty at Suffolk, Edenton Road, South Anna Bridge, Folly Island, Block Island, Drewry’s Bluff, Bermuda Hundred, Cold Harbor, Seige of Petersburg and Richmond, Chappin’s Farm and Fair Oaks. Service in North Carolina included; Fort Fisher, Fort Anderson, Goldsboro, Raleigh, and the Surrender of General Johnston at the Bennets House (Bennet Place) at Durham, North Carolina. . This memorial was presented by his widow Sarah and presented to their children. During the Civil War the 112th New York Infantry regiment sustained casualties of 132 men killed or mortally wounded.
