Description

This collection of buttons is organized on several display and classification cards. The primary card is titled Classification of Pearl and Shell Buttons by Margaret Kelso and features a grid of specimens categorized by shell type and manufacturing technique. Categories include Ocean Pearl Oyster, Univalves Abalone, Turbo (Green Snail), and Trochus. Working methods identified on the card include Engraving, Machining, Piercing, Inlaying, and Gilding. Three additional smaller cards are present, labeled MOP Green Snail, Frames in Shell, and Wood Back. The buttons are constructed from various materials including mother of pearl, abalone, and shell, with some specimens featuring metallic embellishments, such as a raised beetle. The buttons exhibit various decorative techniques including carving, geometric patterns, and iridescent finishes. Handwritten notations are present on several cards, including a reference to BBB PG 247.
