Description
These are buttons comprising a large and diverse collection of vintage and modern examples professionally mounted on four display boards. Three boards are categorized as inlaid and feature a variety of shell, mother-of-pearl, and metal inlays set into substrates of horn, wood, and early synthetics such as celluloid. Decorative motifs include geometric patterns and pictorial designs of birds, fish, and insects. The fourth board, titled Ladies (Heads Only), contains buttons and cameos depicting female portraits in stamped metal, enamel, carved bone, and hand-painted porcelain. Identified materials include vegetable ivory, papier-mache, micro-mosaics, and tortoise over horn. The lot includes pieces signed or attributed to Timothy Dippold and is accompanied by a 2008 Buckeye State Button Society second-place award slip for the inlaid category.
