Description
This collection of antique toleware buttons is constructed from painted metal featuring a black japanned finish. The buttons display various decorative techniques including hand-painted, stenciled, and relief motifs in gold, silver, and polychrome accents. The assortment includes a variety of designs such as floral patterns, landscapes with windmills, insects including butterflies and bees, and various birds with one specifically identified as a rooster. Specialized elements are present among the examples, including iridescent luster finishes, cut steel accents, and decorative central insets. Several pieces are noted as having a saucer or contour shape.
